Actor y cantante francés. Debutó como cantante y comediante en el Folies-Bergère en 1909. Pasó dos años en un campo alemán de prisioneros durante la primera guerra mundial. Fue conocido por su elegante sombrero de paja y corbatín, y su modo alegre y picaresco. Se mudó a Hollywood en 1929, donde actuó en películas que ayudaron a establecer la comedia musical como género fílmico, entre ellas El desfile del amor (1929) y La viuda alegre (1934). Fue criticado por actuar para los alemanes durante la ocupación militar de Francia en la segunda guerra mundial. Entre sus películas posteriores se cuentan Gigi (1958) y Fanny (1961). En 1958 recibió un premio honorario de la Academia.
